The Woodlands Township Board of Directors voted Thursday to support proposed legislation by state Sen. Tommy Williams, R-The Woodlands, that would provide complementary legal advice and services for public servants.
Williams filed SB 148 in the 83rd regular session of the Texas Legislature.
According to the bill, public servants would be granted legal services, including advice or services relating to a will, power of attorney, advance directive and other estate planning documents, rendered to them through a program or clinic that is operated by a local bar association or the State Bar of Texas.
The Wills for Heroes program uses the voluntary services of local attorneys who are part of The Woodlands Bar Association and randomly assigns those attorneys to first responders who sign up with the permission of their agency or department head, the bill states.
The program includes police, constables, the Department of Public Safety, firefighters, paramedics and ambulance drivers.
