Attorneys Helping Attorneys – Achieving Balance and Self-Care Together
January 8, 2020 @ 11:30 am - 1:00 pm$35.00
The undertakings of practicing law require individual lawyers to learn about, take on, advocate for and deal with good people at their worst. The toll that the attorney-client interaction can have is daunting; however, coupling that with deadlines, fear of grievances or malpractice, balancing work and family and having time to care for ourselves has created an environment where addiction, mental illness and even post-traumatic stress disorder can flourish. Sometimes we do not even see it coming. A client taking his/her own life, children being harmed, people suffering from severe bodily injury and death and the deterioration of the family will take its toll somewhere in our psyche or through our own illness and physical conditions. It is time for attorneys to take care of our own. There are tools and resources available for each of us to take care of ourselves and our staff and to reach out to other attorneys in need to help with the afflictions of addiction and mental health disorders. By speaking openly and honestly, we can help each other grow, achieve balance and practice self-care. While I am not a psychologist, spreading the word is important to me personally and to the members of the bar. We are undervalued, underestimated and supposed to be super humans. We need to help each other dispel the stigma associated with addiction and mental illness and spread the word to our legal community of the available resources, how to spot someone in need, and how to reach out.
